Service

First Growth Bordeaux offers private clients a specialist, personal advisory for their purchase of wines to lay down as well as a full consultancy on the development of valuable collections for an eventual resale. Our events-led approach aims to develop an understanding and enjoyment for buying prestige collections whilst building collections that, over a mid-term cycle of 5-10 years, can be considered for a sale for (hopefully!) profit. If taking wine from collections to enjoy at home we will assist a re-purchasing newer vintages and then start the process again.

Our core offer:

•    collection planning and stock selection advice
•    wine education at hosted events
•    managing private reserves and related broking services

When planning a wine collection, we emphasise a balanced mix of highly collectable aged wines with new vintages that are available En Primeur*. We advise a mix of vintages, labels and regions to establish collections whose values are:

A/ robust with low price volatility
B/ able to deliver genuine value growth over the mid-term

We take great care to deliver a highly personalised service that manages each wine acquisition whilst offering a sociable side to developing collections via:

•    vertical tastings (@FGB main office) with guest MW’s
•    menu-matching wine events with professional guest winemakers and chefs
•    a wine tour consultancy for Bordeaux, the Languedoc, Burgundy, Ribeiro Del Duero and Sonoma
•    international wine club and wine cellar membership

We hope you enjoy our service and are always available to answer all enquiries;

Collectors of wine can see their product lines gain value as well as lose value. The international buyer demand influences prices on the very best wines and many factors contribute to that demand. Therefore we do not advise the wine market to someone as a pure and simple profit driving entity. It should be seen for what it is, collecting cases of 12 bottles of wine, whose values are determined by factors out of the control of the wine trader.  Enjoy the process!

*Year on year we take a more measured view on the merits of En Primeur buying as the price setters, particularly in Bordeaux, have altered their strategies. In many instances this has lent to high release pricing so for those clients that insist on buying at early release we will assist the process and refine the traditional decision-making in order to find value for the portfolio.

Its with regret that our wine events programme is temporarily on hold as we, and the hospitality industry in general, adjust to the measures rightly requested by government to adopt social distancing policies.

We're in the right month to mention that First Growth Bordeaux continues to set standards for its enjoyable wine tasting service, as clients move to the more entertaining aspects of the commodity. Collecting wine for purposes of speculating on their values remains an exercise too unpredictable for yet another year and has been less of a focus for many. Faced with persistent political and economic headwinds, all three of the main wine indices dipped in 2019. The downward movements were not sharp, however; the Liv-ex 50 which tracks the performance of the First Growths, suffered the most (-3.6%), while the industry benchmark 100, fell 2.5%.

Summer tastings begin for South East clients as the French release pricing strategy - and it is still a dampener for the energy of the Primeur market. It can no longer be good strategy to buy barrel wine at extortionate prices, ...the Chinese have long since changed their appetites.

There was an enjoyable build up to Christmas as we discovered new regions at our hosted events. For wine collectors, latter 2017 showed some further gains but anticipation is some stabilising of prices. Weak pound influenced by Brexit has no doubt helped UK wine trade but is now factored into price levels. Anticipating a tough year ahead at top end of Bdx pricing.

Prices stabilise across Q1 following rises in second half of 2016. The early reports that suggest a strong 2016 Bdx vintage could be rubber stamped at April Primeur tastings.
